1. too＋형용사＋to부정사 = so＋형용사＋that＋주어＋cannot ...
→ 너무 ~해서 … 못하다, ...하기에는 너무 ~하다
┌ He is too young to go to school.
└ He is so young that he cannot go to school.
→그는 너무 어려서 학교에 갈 수 없다.
┌ The stone is too heavy for me to move.
└ The stone is so heavy that I cannot move it.
→그 돌은 내가 움직이기에는 너무 무겁다.
We are too busy to have a long holiday. →우리는 너무 바빠서 긴 휴가를 가질 수 없다.
She was too excited to sleep. →그녀는 너무 흥분해서 잠을 잘 수 없었다.
This book is too difficult for me to read. →이 책은 내가 읽기에는 너무 어렵다.
This blue shirt is too big for me to wear. →이 파란색 셔츠는 내가 입기에는 너무 크다.
This computer system is too complicated for me to operate. →이 컴퓨터 시스템은 너무 복잡해서 내가 작동시킬 수가 없다.)
2 형용사＋enough + to부정사 = so＋형용사＋that＋주어＋(can) ~ (...할만큼 ~하다, ...할 정도로 ~하다)
┌ He is old enough to go to school.
└ He is so old that he can go to school.
→그는 학교에 갈 나이이다.
┌He was wise enough to accept the offer.
└ He was so wise that he accepted the offer.
→그는 그 제안을 받아들일 정도로 현명했다.
He is not tall enough to touch the ceiling. →그는 천장에 닿을 만큼 키가 크지 않다.
Bill was stupid enough to believe the story. →빌은 그 이야기를 믿을 정도로 어리석었다.
She was not kind enough to show me the way. →그녀는 나에게 길을 가리켜 줄만큼 친절하지는 않았다.
This book is easy enough for the beginners to read. →이 책은 초보자들이 읽을 수 있을 정도로 쉽다.
He walked slowly enough for the children to follow. →그는 아이들이 따라 올 수 있을 정도로 천천히 걸었다.
3 in order+to부정사 = so as+to부정사 (~하기 위하여)
┌ He has to work hard in order to support his family.
└ He has to work hard so as to support his family.
→그는 자신의 가족을 부양하기 위하여 열심히 일해야 한다.
She left early in order to arrive there before dark. →그녀는 어두워지기 전에 그곳에 도착하기 위하여 일찍 떠났다.
We got up early in order to catch the first plane. →우리는 첫 비행기를 타기 위하여 일찍 일어났다.
※보충 : in order to ~나 so as to ~는 목적을 나타내는 구문이므로 to부정사의 부사적 용법으로 대신할 수 있다.
He has to work hard to support his family. →그는 자신의 가족을 부양하기 위하여 열심히 일해야 한다.
※보충2 : in order to ~나 so as to ~의 부정형은 in order not to ~, so as not to ~이다.
He worked hard in order not to fail in the exam. →그는 시험에 낙방하지 않으려고 열심히 공부했다.
She left early so as not to miss the buss. →그녀는 버스를 놓치지 않으려고 일찍 떠났다.
4 It takes+사람+시간+to 부정사 (아무개가 ~하는데 시간이 ...걸리다)
It took us three hours to finish the work. →우리가 그 일을 끝내는데 세 시간이 걸렸다.
It will take me a day or two to fix this bike. →내가 이 자전거를 수리하는데는 하루나 이틀 정도 걸릴 겁니다.
